Born and raised near Ilkley Moor, Alan's love of gardening began at the tender age of ten. His early carrer concentrated on horticultural journalism but his name, and brand, grew following his decision to become freelance.

In the few short years, Alan has been named "Gardening Writer of the Year" twice and voted "Television Personality of the Year" for four successive years. Not only did Alan present "Gardeners World" and "Ground Force" for many years, he has also penned some 40 gardening books.

Away from gardening, Alan is associated with over thirty five different charities including the Rainbow Trust and the Yorkshire Air Ambulance.
